Data corrections

When we find a mistake, we record what was wrong, what changed, and the evidence. Source documents inform our work; their publishers do not certify or endorse this tool.

26 September 2026 · Corrected: gamepad session boundaries and sampling gaps

An unplug/replug while paused could preserve old observed buttons for a newly connected controller with the same reported identity. A disconnected selection could also switch to another controller without an explicit choice. Both behaviors are corrected. Previously, elapsed time alone could finish a five-second rest observation after a stalled browser frame; completion now requires continuous sampling with no gap exceeding 250 milliseconds. Reproduced using visible local browser fixtures and state tests. Physical controller and cross-browser compatibility still require real-device verification.

26 September 2026 · Clarified: a shortcut can intercept an untested key

The short Fn notice did not explain the specific case where Fn + F11 shows the Mac desktop but the page receives no F11 event. The guides now separate system actions, browser observations and hardware conclusions. Highlighting an untested key still means no matching event has been observed in this session; it does not diagnose failure. The page cannot inspect the user’s system shortcut assignments.

25 September 2026 · Corrected: moving controls and delayed keyboard space

The previous page initially left only a small empty keyboard area. Rendering its keys then pushed the results downward; changing text could also move nearby controls. The keyboard slot and changing labels now reserve space. Deliberately delayed local loading checks found no layout-shift entries in the tested desktop and mobile scenarios after the fix. This is a limited browser test, not a real-user Core Web Vitals result or a guarantee for every device.

25 September 2026 · Revised: the extra language confirmation

The earlier prelaunch review introduced an Apply button after the language select. That extra action made switching less clear. It is superseded by a disclosure containing explicit language links: clicking a link or activating it with Enter navigates immediately, while opening the menu alone does not navigate. As before, switching language reloads the page and clears the current test session.

25 September 2026 · Corrected: capture scope and refresh

Previously, help-section key presses could enter the session even when the keyboard was off screen, and F5 could discard it by refreshing. New presses are now accepted only while the test is visible and active, outside interactive controls and the report. Key release cleanup still runs. F5 cancellation is deliberately limited to that test context. Browser-reserved actions cannot all be prevented.

25 September 2026 · Corrected: toggle and unknown events

A Mac Caps Lock event without a paired release could leave a false held state and inflate the simultaneous count. Caps Lock remains observable on macOS but is excluded from held-key counts there. Unidentified no longer counts as a physical key. We still show the original key and code in details; a missing physical identity is not a missing hardware key.

25 September 2026 · Corrected: ASCII fallback override

The earlier detector documented the ASCII fallback limitation but could still silently apply such a map over a language-based layout suggestion. It now keeps the current layout and offers conflicting maps as an explicit option. The Keyboard Map document is a WICG draft, and browser support and mappings vary.

25 September 2026 · Corrected: layout is not geometry

The earlier prototype assigned ISO geometry to every non-US preset. That rule cannot represent all keyboards. Geometry can now be selected independently: ANSI, ISO, ABNT2, or JIS. Russian lettering, for example, can be combined with ANSI or ISO geometry. Counts come from the selected diagram, minus explicitly excluded keys.

25 September 2026 · Corrected: ISO row spacing

The previous grid let the key beside Enter overlap the Enter area by one grid unit. The home-row spacing is corrected. Tests now check occupied cells, unique physical codes, and counts across the supported reference configurations.

25 September 2026 · Corrected: compact Escape and French detection

Removing the function row previously removed Escape from compact references. Escape is now the top-left target in 60% and 65% diagrams. French legacy auto-suggestions also require matching punctuation, because Standard AZERTY shares its letter positions but differs in symbols.

25 September 2026 · Clarified: automatic detection has limits

Browser language and time zone are preferences or hints, not proof of location. A keyboard map can prefer an ASCII-capable layout instead of the active input layout. We show the source of suggestions and never claim to identify the exact keyboard model. Explicit language links remain accessible without automatic redirection.

Verified limitation: Fn, IME and system keys

Fn may be handled by hardware without a browser event. It is optional in our count and lights up only if reported. Japanese conversion keys and system shortcuts can also be intercepted. An untested key means no matching event has been observed; it is not a fault diagnosis.

How to make an issue reproducible

Keep the keyboard model, OS, browser version, selected diagram, expected behavior, and original code/key/location from Key details. Use harmless test keys. Include a manufacturer reference if available. This page is a public record; it is not a submission form.
